Located on the Carson Tahoe Medical Campus, the center operates as an extension of Sierra Surgery and features the latest technological advancements, including 3D mammography, 2D mammography, breast biopsy, and breast MRI.

To service our Douglas County residents, these women’s imaging services can also be accessed through Carson Tahoe’s Minden Medical Center.

One in eight women in the U.S. will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime. Your best defense against breast cancer is early detection. Women’s Preventative Services Initiative, or WPSI, recommends average-risk women begin mammography screening no earlier than age 40 and no later than age 50. Screening mammography should occur at least biennially and as frequently as every year.

3-D Mammography and Dense Breast Tissue

Is 3-D the way to go?

The answer is a resounding “Yes!” Every mammogram performed at Carson Tahoe Health, including Minden Medical Center, utilizes 3-D Mammography (tomosynthesis) technology, which is one of the most advanced forms of diagnostic tests available for the screening of breast cancer. 3-D mammography takes slices of images through the breast offering an x-ray projection of the breast. Studies show that early detection of breast cancer increase and false positives decrease substantially when 3-D imaging is used. Additionally, 3-D imaging is incredibly important for women with dense breast tissue. About 40% of women in the U.S. have dense breasts, meaning they have more glandular/fibrous tissue than fatty tissue. Dense breast tissue and cancer both show up as white on a standard mammogram. 3-D imaging is significant because it reveals hidden tumors that may not appear is standard 2-D imaging.
